- The S&P BSE SENSEX also known as BSE 30 or simply SENSEX is a stock market index of 30 listed companies in the BSE Ltd. The value of the index is calculated by taking weighted average of the free float market capitalization of these financially sound organization. These stocks are some of the most traded stocks in the market and represent different industrial sectors of the country. Although it is not a true reflector of all the market capitalization of all the companies listed in the BSE, but it is taken as a fair indicator of the market conditions in India.
Some of the companies which are part of SENSEX as of 17th February, 2012 are: State Bank of India, Tata Steel, Coal India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Infosys, ONGC, Reliance Industries, etc.
On October, 2007, SENSEX crossed the 20,000 mark for the first time in its history.
