- Narendra Damodardas Modi is an Indian politician and the 15th Prime Minister of India. He started his formal political journey from the state of Gujarat and considers former Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee as his mentor and Guru. He has been the most popular Chief Minister of Gujarat since he was propelled to that position in the year 2001. His followers and detractors alike are very opinionated about him and people have very polarized view of him. He was born on 17 September 1950 and became the 14th Chief Minister of Gujarat. He is a member of the Bhartiya Janta Party(BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
He has been a controversial and much debatable figure both in India and outside India more specifically for his alleged role in the Godhra incidence and the Gujarat violence following it(none of which has been proved till the year 2013). The highest court in the country the Honorable Supreme Court of India in its ruling has found him not guilty for the Gujarat riots. These fact has not deterred his followers from raising the riots of 2002, whenever there is a discussion on Narendra Modi.
NaMo is widely seen as a development friendly new age politician by his supporters and has been hailed for the phenomenal growth rate of Gujarat during the decade 2000-2011.
Some political pundits consider him to be a great marketeer of the brand Modi and the term “NaMo” is seen as a step in the same direction.
The media has coined another term “Namonia” by mixing the terms NaMo and pneumonia to refer to a frenzy of his charm among his followers. The fervor of Namonia was on its peak during the General Election of May 2014, in which Narendra Modi led his coalition force- the NDA to a surprising absolute majority in the lower house of the parliament. The elections also saw one of the worst defeats for INC- the grand old party of India.
