The full form of HCF is Highest Common Factor. For two or more numbers it is the largest number by which if the original numbers are divided the quotient will be a whole number and there is no remainder. At least one of the original numbers must be non-zero to find out the HCF.

For example; for 36, 48 and 60 the HCF is 12. When we divided 36 by 12 the quotient is 3, for 38 the quotient is 4 and for 60 the quotient is 5.

In case of two numbers where one number is a factor of the larger number then the smaller number will be the HCF of the two numbers. For eg; take two number13 and 65, as 13 is a factor of 65, hence HCF of 13 and 65 is 13.
Highest common factor may also be referred to as greatest common divisor (gcd), greatest common factor (gcf), highest common factor (hcf), or greatest common measure (gcm).

Similarly LCM is least common multiple. For two or more numbers it is the minimum number which is divisible by all the numbers. For example for 3, 8, 12 the LCM is 24. 24 is divisible by 3, 8 and 12.
